about

The debut album from Geisha features nine tracks and is quite minimalist in style. Many of the tracks revolve around pulses, loops, orchestral samples, and deep basslines; a feature of Geisha music.

Besides the gently flowing "Intention" and the short "Drops", the tracks do not feature any drums or beats - the concept behind this music is that the repeated chord progressions create their own rhythm; a musical ebb and flow. This is augmented by slow, deep bass and looped guitar lines.

This is most evident in "Sequence", which also features spooky orchestral samples and is the centrepiece of the album. "Seven" starts with a very clear guitar part but then disappears into a heavily reverbed section, which reveals subtle changes over its duration. "Sun" is built around multiple sitar parts and bubbling guitars.

The most unusual track here is "Sound Collage 1 - Build" - which is like no other Geisha track. Made up of a series of sound effects and samples, this track is inspired by the cut-up techniques of Stockhausen and the Beatles' "Revolution 9".

While subsequent Geisha releases are more complex, the simplicity and uniqueness of these tracks form the basis of what Geisha is all about.

Road Records: "Fans of the ambient glitchy soundscapes of the likes of Christian Fennesz, Brian Eno and Susumu Yokoto will instantly fall in love with this understated little gem... There is some lovely slide guitar sounds thrown over the top of this totally dreamlike sound to create one of the finest Irish collections of ambient electronic music; really, really superb stuff and well worth your attention"
