On his 9th album, AFTERGLOW, Robert Crosbie/Geisha takes a step in a new direction.

AFTERGLOW is inspired by music from the late 80s and early 90s. While not a recreation of music from that era, the sounds of that time period informed the decision-making process. How would an artist at that time approach the arrangement and what instruments would be used? What would a Robert Crosbie/Geisha album sound like if it had been made in 1989, or 1991?

While writing the album, Robert dove deep into the sounds of the era he grew up in: Early Peter Gabriel, King Crimson's 80s albums, Yes's "90125", FM Rock, and 80s pop classics. Even AOR (adult-oriented rock) fare such as Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms" was mined for inspiration, sounds, and ideas. 

However, this album should not be classed as an "80s" or "90s" album (or for that matter, an "AOR" album). While many of the sounds taken from that time appear here (big drums, twangy Fender Stratocaster guitars, fretless bass, moody synths), they are combined with the familiar Robert Crosbie/Geisha palette of lush ambient soundscapes, deep dub bass, and shoegaze guitars. Live keyboards play an essential role as ever, this time including vintage synth sounds and syncopated rhythms, a nod towards the 'synthwave' genre.

While featuring more upbeat tracks than any previous Robert Crosbie/Geisha album (e.g. "Snapdragon", "Canopy", "Solemn City", "Tapping Mole"), it retains a dreamy, chilled-out vibe, allowing the listener to drift through a variety of moods. Tracks like "The Opening Sentence" and "The Martyr's Mantle" will be familiar to regular listeners though with added new dimensions; "Sugar" is very much a Geisha-epic and pulls inspiration from Spacemen 3, with a loping 'Manchester' groove. 

The heart of the album lies in three tracks: the singles "Solemn City" and "For Your Dreams", and "Field of Secrets". Here, the influences are proudly to the fore; the perfect blend of synth, guitar, and beat.

AFTERGLOW is music from the 80s and 90s, reflected through the 2020s. There's something in this especially personal album for everyone.

AFTERGLOW is the first in a trilogy of thematically linked albums.
